Melbourne is on track for restrictions to be eased in a week, but there is no relief for businesses hoping for an early reopening in October, despite Victoria recording its lowest number of coronavirus cases in three months.
“The loudest voices are not going to win this debate, because it’s not a debate,” Premier Daniel Andrews said on Sunday.
“The evidence is clear the science could not be clearer. If you do this too fast, well then, we’ll be back in lockdown again.”
Professor Adrian Esterman, chair of biostatistics at the University of South Australia, predicts Melbourne could reach the required targets for step three a week early on October 22, based on current trends.
