Paolo Scaroni has reaffirmed his ‘complete confidence’ in Ivan Gazidis and revealed that Milan have lost ‘about €30m’ during the coronavirus pandemic.
Milan beat Juventus 4-2 the other night and Scaroni had praise for coach Stefano Pioli, even if Gazidis is ‘right to explore new horizons’, amidst talk of Ralf Rangnick coming in.
“It was a memorable game, one we’ll remember for years to come,” the club’s President told Corriere della Sera.
“I talked to Pioli: I congratulated him. Even those who didn’t play very well gave the impression that they were part of a motivated team who enjoy playing football.
“It seems to me that Pioli has managed to build a proper team. As for whether he’ll stay, I have complete confidence in these decisions, which are made by Gazidis.
“In turn, the owners have complete confidence in him. Gazidis and I talk, but not about technical things, rather about how to manage certain situations.
“I don’t think Gazidis has decided on a revolution yet. Having said that, it’s right that the CEO explores new horizons.
“As for Maldini, I have an excellent relationship with him. Ask him if he’s staying.”
The Rossoneri’s finances inevitably took a tumble between March and June, and the 73-year-old reiterated the need for a new stadium.
“About €30m, between missed gate receipts and reduced income from sponsors. We had to postpone lots of decisions, some of them market-related: we’ll make them in August.
“Of course, we look at our accounts with regret, but Milan’s future with Elliott isn’t in any danger. Other clubs are in more trouble.
“With FFP there’s no other choice: you have to increase your revenue streams. The stadium is a crucial ingredient, TV rights are the other pillar.
“Sponsorships, on the other hand, are linked to sporting results. They’re two mountains that we have to climb together.
“I’ll talk to someone who says they know everything about football, so I ask them: ‘But do you know how FFP works? No? Then you don’t know anything about football.’
“Barcelona generate €159m from their stadium, Real €145m. We generate €30m: €115m is the minimum for a big club.
“To be clear, with proceeds from the stadium, we can buy a whole team. There’s no contradiction between the stadium and sporting results. It’s the way things work.”
