Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reserved special praise for in-form Anthony Martial after the Frenchman notched his 15th goal of the season in a convincing 3-0 win over struggling Watford on Sunday.
Martial, who has now scored in three successive appearances in all club competitions for the first time since September 2017, has been United’s main striker in recent weeks after Marcus Rashford suffered a double stress fracture to the back.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed the improvement Anthony Martial has shown
Solskjaer revealed after the game that Martial has been doing extra work in training to familiarise himself more with the no.9 role.
“Anthony is still learning. He’s played in a wide role for many, many years, but he’s getting more and more used to playing as a no.9 now,” he told talkSPORT.
“He’s been training really well and doing extra work. He’s playing every game and becoming fitter and fitter.
“As a result he’s becoming more and more confident scoring different type of goals.”
He continued: “This week he scored three different goals, one as a centre forward/no.9 [against Chelsea] with a header.
“The one in Brugge was all about hard work and being an opportunist after picking up on a mistake. But he did all the work himself.
“And today that is the Anthony we have always known, the more who has more skill than most of the players around.
Meanwhile, Solskjaer also hailed Bruno Fernandes for his performance in Sunday’s comprehensive victory over the Hornets.
The £67million man opened his account for his new side, with Mason Greenwood and the aforementioned Martial also on the scoresheet.
Danny Murphy says Man United should have sold Martial and kept Lukaku
“He’s very fit, he’s been playing the full season after all,” Solskjaer added. “He’s confident and has been in good form. He’s slotted in really nicely.
“He’s got a great personality and he’s a great character. It’s given everyone else around a huge boost [him signing].
“We’ve seen what kind of qualities he can give the team and today it just shows Man United character stepping up to take the penalty and finishing it how he did.”
